Lovers of …

Love gives us hope for a new day. Love grants us comfort after a terrible thing has just happened. Love provides the strength that we need to hang in there every day. Although life is tough, love keeps us going. Though circumstances aren’t favourable to us at all, love motivates us to live for our loved ones. We are so blessed that we still have love in this world!
The world is full of lovers, but of different kinds. Few of them are sacrificial lovers. Many are fickle lovers. Some are eccentric lovers. But more and more people have become lovers of themselves.
Countless politicians are lovers of themselves, they serve not their countries, but their own egos and self-interests. It is quite natural that bosses with only self-love treat their coworkers as trash. It is sad that excessive self-love keeps on destroying marriages, father-son relationship, father-daughter relationship, mother-daughter relationship, mother-son relationship and family relationship.
The Bible clearly foretells that “Difficult times will come in the last days.” (2 Timothy 3:1 HCSB). “For people will be lovers of themselves” (2 Timothy 3:2 NET) It is a sad reality but at least it reminds us that our only goals in life are not to seek for capricious human love. I like the song “Jesus, lover of my soul”. One day the lyrics suddenly popped up in my mind and I began singing it. Jesus is a sacrificial lover that He loves me with an unending and unchangeable love. This is what Paul experienced as well:
35 Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? 36 (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”) 37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. 38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:35–39 NLT)
