Although the Raptors lost the first two games, some of their supporters still had hopes that they would turn around beating the Milwaukee Bucks in the remaining five games. They did! Together with other Canadians, we are hopeful that the Raptors would continue to play well and clinch the most prized basketball trophy.
On the other side of the world, the Champions League final between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur is to be played in Madrid on June 1. If the managers and players had lost hopes in themselves, both teams wouldn’t be in the final. Liverpool were down to the Spanish football giant Barcelona by three goals to nil in the first leg of the semi-final, but they kept on believing and beat the Spanish super team by four goals to nil in the second leg. Spurs were remarkable as well. Although they lost the first game of the semi-final and they conceded two goals in the first half of the second game, they came from behind scoring three goals. The amazing thing was that the winning goal came at the dying seconds of the match.
What have I learnt from these great coaches and athletes? The first thing is “don’t lose hope in yourself”. The second thing is “keep on believing”. These two lessons are important for me in life. Life can be tough and grueling. As the popular saying says, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going”. The above two life lessons are beneficial to us!
Before his death, the famous philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre said, “I know I shall die in hope –but hope needs a foundation.” He is very right. Hope really needs a foundation. Believing in ourselves is good, having hopes in ourselves is crucial, but we simply need something more.
The third verse of an old hymn goes like this:
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide.
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside.
The song reminds me of the ultimate source of our hope. God is faithful, who is our source of hope and strength. As for me, the ultimate foundation of human hope is based on the Creator and Ruler of the universe.
