Make the World a Better Place (i365 Day 365) 2.0

What’s your New Year’s wish? After almost a year of fighting against COVID-19 and living the new normal, I guess most of us would wish our lives could return to the way it was. It’s natural that we would wish the world to become a better place. But, in order to transform a wish to become a reality, we need to do something about it. Possible actions would contribute to the fulfilment of our wishes. Concerning the wish of returning to a normal life, wearing masks, social distancing and getting the vaccine are some of the possible personal actions that we could all take.

Rosh Hashanah, also called the Feast of Trumpets in the Old Testament (Leviticus 23:23–25),  marks the start of the religious new year for followers of Judaism. Most importantly, it ushers a 10-day period of self-examination and penitence that ends on Yom Kippur. All of us should apply the essence of this festive season to the making of our New Year’s wishes and resolutions. Before we move on to a new year, we need to repent of our mistakes that we made in the past year. Also, making the right resolutions is one of the baby steps that we must take in order to make the world a better place.

Let’s ponder a few Bible verses about self-examination.

12How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults. 13Keep your servant from deliberate sins! Don’t let them control me. Then I will be free of guilt and innocent of great sin. 14May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. (Psalm 19:12–14 NLT)

Let’s pose a question to God. “Dear God, can You teach me how to examine my heart before making any New Year’s resolutions?”

Let’s practice what you learnt. Ask God to teach you how to examine your heart before making any New Year’s resolutions.

Let’s proclaim to others about your experiential knowledge. Share with your family your New Year’s Resolution.
