Charles Spurgeon, English pastor, was called the Prince of Preachers. Under his pen name John Ploughman, he wrote the following words: “Matrimony came from Paradise, and leads to it. I never was half so happy, before I was a married man, as I am now. When you are married, your bliss begins. Let the husband love his wife as he loves himself, and a little better, for she is his better half.”
The term “Matrimony” first appeared in 1830s, which means a person’s wife or husband. If you take the expression literally, our spouses are really our “Better Half”. Loving our other half is a must and a natural thing to do.
Genesis 24 talks about the old servant of Abraham, who goes out searching for the future better half of his master’s son. Young people, read this chapter prayerfully. Married couples, revisit the truths about marriage. Let’s ponder the words of Genesis 24.
Ponder
1Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years. And the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things. 2And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household, who had charge of all that he had, “Put your hand under my thigh, 3that I may make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell, 4but will go to my country and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Isaac.” (Genesis 24:1–4 ESV)

Let’s pose a question to God. “Lord, can You grant me the determination to love my better half?”
